Donald Trump has criticised NATO allies for refusing to join a US-led effort to secure the Strait of Hormuz, as the ongoing conflict with Iran continues to disrupt one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
The war, which began on 28 February with US and Israeli strikes on Iran, has now entered its third week.
Per reports, more than 1,300 people have been killed in Iran, over 1,000 in Lebanon, 15 in Israel, and 13 US military personnel.
Millions of people in Iran and Lebanon have been forced to leave their homes.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern for global trade. Around 20% of the world’s oil passes through this narrow route, making it critical for the energy supply.
However, ongoing attacks and security threats have made it risky for ships to pass through safely.
Iran has continued its strikes on Israel and also targeted energy sites in nearby Gulf countries.
There are also warnings that attacks could expand to other types of vessels, increasing fears among shipowners and crews.
Trump said NATO countries have not supported US efforts to reopen the route and protect shipping.
He described the alliance as weak without the US and said other countries are not doing enough to help despite being affected by high oil prices.
He also claimed that securing the route would not involve much risk, even as the conflict continues.
European countries have shown little interest in joining the military effort. Leaders in Europe…
The Panama Canal is operating at full capacity, handling between 36 and 38 ships a day, as more LNG carriers are choosing this route due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Canal administrator Ricaurte Vásquez said on March 20, 2026, that demand has increased mainly from ships loading liquefied natural gas at U.S. ports.
The situation in the Middle East has forced many vessels to change their routes.
The Strait of Hormuz, which is a key route for oil and gas exports from countries like Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, has been shut.
At the same time, many shipowners are avoiding the Suez Canal due to safety concerns.
Because of this, the Panama Canal is now being used more to move cargo, especially LNG, to different parts of the world.
Traffic through the canal was already rising before the conflict began around three weeks ago, but the current situation has pushed it even higher.
Authorities are now planning to offer one slot per day for LNG tankers, which is a big jump from just four slots per month earlier.
The canal is able to handle this increase because water levels have improved. In 2023 and 2024, a drought forced the canal to limit the number of ships passing through each day.
Now, with enough water available, it is running at full strength. Daily traffic has also gone above the earlier estimate of 34 ships per day for this year.
Officials have also said that a maintenance program planned from March to September will not affect ship…
Donald Trump has claimed that the United States has severely damaged Iran’s naval capability, stating that 58 Iranian vessels were destroyed in just two days during recent operations.
He made the remarks at the White House in Washington during an event.
The statement, if confirmed, could mark one of the largest reported naval losses in the region in recent decades.
Speaking at a ceremony, Trump said the US military had dealt a major blow to Iran’s naval forces.
He claimed that Iran “had a navy two weeks ago” but that it is now “at the bottom of the sea,” adding that 58 ships were taken out in a short span of two days.
He also stated that US forces faced little resistance and described the operation as unmatched in scale. According to him, Iran’s military systems, including air defence and radar, had also been neutralised.
However, there has been no independent confirmation of these claims so far.
Trump described the US Navy as the strongest in the world and said it was far ahead of others.
The US President repeated that stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons remains a key goal. He said the US will not allow it and added that earlier administrations should have acted sooner on the issue.
A day earlier, Trump said the US is not planning to send ground troops to the Middle East. He said if such a decision were taken, it would not be publicly announced in advance.
He also spoke about US defence systems, claiming that 114 incoming…
