Donald Trump, who had imposed an oil blockade on Cuba, allowed a Russian Oil tanker to arrive on the Caribbean Island, possibly to prevent further tensions at sea with Moscow.
He told the reporters, “If a country wants to send some oil to Cuba, right now, I have no problem whether it’s Russia or not.”
This is a shocking move since the US Government had prevented oil from reaching Cuba, to put pressure on the Government in Havana, as Trump had mused about ‘taking’ the island under his control.
He had also issued statements in this regard, threatening the Cuban Government.
The New York Times reported that it remains unclear why Trump had allowed the shipment to reach Cuba, amidst a worsening energy crisis in the country.
Anatoly Kolodkinis, carrying a humanitarian shipment of 100,000 tonnes of crude oil, has arrived in Cuba and will offload at the Matanzas Port.
This shipment was much needed as Cuba had not received any oil for three months, which led to the rationing of gasoline and oil, and long power outages across the island.
Cuba lost its ally and major oil supplier in January when the U.S captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
After this, Trump said the US would impose tariffs on any country that sends oil to Cuba.
The illegal oil blockade imposed on Cuba by the U.S led to stringent emergency-like measures throughout the Caribbean nation.
Fuel prices also rose manifold, and public transport dwindled. Even a few airlines suspended flights to Cuba, which badly hit the country’s fragile economy.
However, this recent development brings some hope for the Cubans.
The shipment could be converted into 250,000 barrels of diesel, enough to cover the country’s demand for 12 to 13 days.
