The 1990s Archives: Founding the Digital Maritime Frontier

International Shipping News (aajs.com) was established on April 24, 1996, in Houston, Texas. At a time when the maritime industry relied almost exclusively on faxes and paper ledgers this domain was pioneered to explore how the emerging “World Wide Web” could transform shipyard management and global logistics.

A Legacy of Digital Innovation

During the late 90s, we operated our own servers to provide the industry with two distinct digital services. These archives preserve the original data and editorial stance of those pioneering platforms:

  • The Digital Shipyard (SYI): This section houses the records of ShipYard International. Here, we developed one of the world’s first interactive, Java-based shipyard databases, allowing yards from SIMA Peru to Blohm+Voss Germany to manage their own digital presence in real-time.
  • Shipping International News (SIN): This archive contains our historical reporting on the global shipping market. From tracking the freight rate shifts of the TACA agreement to providing technical commentary on major shipyard mergers, these files offer a unique window into the industry’s evolution over the last 30 years.
